Limited edition print/The Italian chapel in Orkney
Limited edition print/The Italian chapel in Orkney
A limited edition print from a watercolour painting by Orkney artist Jane Glue
printed on C-Type Matt paper in editions of 100 prints.
The Italian chapel was built during WW2 by the Italian prisoners of war who were imprisoned in Orkney and built the famous Churchill Barriers. The interior of the chapel is beautifully decorated with anything the prisoners could find to hand. There is driftwood used for walls and bully beef tins made into lanterns, but most of all there are amazing hand painted murals and wrought ironwork created by the prisoners. There were originally two chapels but only one was saved. It is wonderful that we still have this amazing building.
